I recently built a quadcore system with 8800 gts and I can only play games. When I try to play movies the system says codec error. then I let windows take me to a web stie for help and low and behold they wnat me to puchase a file download form microsoft. is there any way around this? some one help me.

Yeah you definitely need the codecs. But i downloaded a media player that plays almost anything. The name is 'K-Lite Codec Pack' its a media plamicrosoft download dvd playeryer and it does the trick for me. I hardly use WMP.
u need to download a certain type of software to play them
most of these softwares are free
try searching it on google or yahoo.
Unfortunately these CODEC's are what DVD player programs have. Here's a free player you can use.
