I'm applying for a job that's asking specifically for personal references. What kinds of questions will they ask them? Is it just going to be questions pertaining to me or will they be asking questions about the references themselves as well?
Don't Supply References On Your Resume
In today’s job market it’s standard not to include references on your resume. It’s much better to use that space for important skills, experience and education. Therefore, you should create a separate sheet that lists your references. Typically, employers request three professional and three personal references.
Personal References
When listing personal references include your reference’s name, job title if helpful to your image, address (ask references if they wish you to use their business or personal address) and phone number. If the personal reference is a co-worker it can be beneficial to point this out.
Ask Permission to Use References
Prior to providing a reference list, aquestion to ask personal referencessk each of your references for permission to use them as a reference. It’s also to your benefit to let them know the types of positions you will be applying for and what skills are needed in those positions. Then ask them to discuss what they believe to be your best talents, traits or skills when speaking with prospective employers that contact them.
Verify What References Will Say About You
Frequently, people will ask someone to be a reference and the person says, "Sure." Yet, they end up providing poor references. If you ask someone to be a reference also ask them what they would say about your personality and your reliability when they speak with a potential employer.
They may ask for personal references to determine what kind of person you are. Some employers will specify the number of years and nature of the relationship. A character, or personal, reference is typically provided by someone outside of the workplace who has known you for severquestion to ask personal referencesal years and is not a family member. Character references will describe your personal qualities and may also refer to tasks you’ve performed in your community or at school. For example, a friend, neighbor, teacher. clergy or members, you’ve known 3+ years. Traits such as i.e. dedicated, reliable meeting assignment in a timely fashion, outgoing pleasant personality, volunteers to assist with????, respected by the community or school etc.
